Volunteers’ Week (1-7 June 2020) is an annual celebration of the contribution people make around the world through volunteering. Although the coronavirus pandemic has stopped many projects, we CELEBRATE our CURRENT volunteers and invite FUTURE volunteers to find out more about Assumption Volunteers! Why not consider taking some time out and volunteer with us in the next academic year?
Since the middle of March 2020 we have been practicing the art of social distancing in the fight against the Covid-19 Coronavirus pandemic. Both our UK and overseas projects are affected by the lockdown and new projects are on hold for the time being. This past month we also said farewell to Helen Granger, who has been the inspirational coordinator of Assumption Volunteers in the past 14 years!
Our six volunteers are making a great contribution in their projects and gaining skills, friends and confidence. Now we are looking for our new volunteers to start August/September. Will you be one of them? Opportunities in Philippines, Rwanda, India, Lithuania, Belgium and UK.
Do you have a GCSE or A-Level in French and want to volunteer in a country where you can become more fluent? There are two projects in Belgium for a French-speaking volunteer; Helen, the AV coordinator in England, went to see them in October.
On 5th September our five new volunteers from 3 continents arrived in Newcastle to serve in Kids Kabin and in the Good Neighbour Project
At the end of her year Myra reflects on the community they formed: "Community building doesn’t just happen in the first weeks doing ice-breakers and fun events. It forms when you’re facing hardships and tough moments when you don’t always know what to do.
The project which started in the Sisters' flat in Newcastle is now 25 years old and on 19 July celebrates its expansion, achievement and impact in Walker. Our volunteers have been involved for most of those years.
Our overseas volunteers are home from Vietnam and the Philippines and our international Newcastle volunteers finish very soon. We thank them for their energy and enthusiasm and the talents they shared so generously and we rejoice in their growth in friendship, confidence and skills.
