Visit to India

The volunteer co-ordinator is just back from a 2-week visit to India, staying with Assumption communities to see where we might place volunteers, what they would do and how they would live. It was a very enjoyable and fascinating time.

I've just returned from a visit to India where I stayed with 5 Assumption communities in Kerala and Maharashtra. I experienced great hospitality and welcome wherever I went and we are able to send two volunteers to Thelpara in early September. Thelpara is in rural Kerala, close by the Western Ghats, surrounded by trees - teak, rubber, coconut, banana, mango, papaya...and spices. The sisters are building a new kindergarten/primary school which will open in June. Volunteers can teach English to the children using song, rhyme, drama, story, poetry and play. There will also be opportunities to give further training to the teachers.

I also visited a community in Calicut and four more in Maharashtra. As the school year runs June to March there will be the possibility of a second project teaching adults near Pune for March - July.
