Visit to Lithuania

I've just been to Lithuania to visit Rebecca, our first volunteer there. She has been assisting the English teachers in the secondary school and is much appreciated by staff and students alike. After a visit to the school we went to the sea for the weekend and I saw much of this beautiful country.

The first place we visited was the Hill of Crosses, a symbol of Lithuania's suffering and inextinguishable faith, with hundreds of thousands of crosses and every day people bring more, in celebration or thanksgiving or prayer.

Then we went to the coast where there is a unique, wonderful peninsula covered by dunes and forests. Reached by ferry it is 60 miles long and 2 miles wide at its widest with the Baltic Sea on one side and the Curonian lagoon on the other. It is a national park and very beautiful. We spent the day here, paddling in the sea, having a picnic on the dunes and enjoying the peace and the small villages in the May sunshine.

In contrast we went also to Palanga, a seaside resort with more white sandy beaches and dunes, and a bustling market street. We had a very restful weekend and saw a lot of this lovely country.

Rebecca is coming back for a second year. If anyone would like to volunteer there is still space.
